To make Secret Sauce in Welcome to Elderfield, grow an Eyeleaf Seed, harvest the Eyeball, and put it into a Grinder. You can also check the General Store and the ingredients attached to the Note to Self at home. Check the General Store’s current stock; if Secret Sauce is missing, use the Eyeball-and-Grinder route.
Choose the route that fits your progress

If you need sauce for the Gatekeeper's Pizza, first check the items already available at home. The Note to Self can provide pizza ingredients, while the refrigerator may already hold food collected earlier. This is a useful first check before buying seeds and waiting for a new crop.
If you are near the General Store, look at its actual inventory. Secret Sauce has appeared there, but it has also been absent for players attempting the same Pizza objective. A fixed restock time or a guaranteed unlock condition is not confirmed, so repeatedly returning on an assumed schedule can waste a trip.
If the store does not have it, use the farming and processing route. That route needs an Eyeball and access to a Grinder. Once those prerequisites are available, the important distinction is between owning the input somewhere in storage and actually putting it into the processor.
| Route | Action | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Home note | Read Note to Self and collect its attachments | A starting supply, not a repeatable production method |
| General Store | Check the current shop inventory | Stock is not guaranteed for every version or stage |
| Eyeleaf and Grinder | Grow an Eyeball and load it into the Grinder | Requires the crop and processor |
| Exploration loot | Keep any sauce you find in containers or while exploring | Not a dependable fixed drop |
Collect the Note to Self attachments
Search the books at home for the Note to Self. Open the note in your journal and mark it as read to collect the attached ingredients. Finding the note and collecting its attachments are separate actions, so check the journal if you remember seeing the reminder but cannot find the ingredients.
The note describes making a Pizza and supplies the ingredients for that idea in the early-game sequence. The associated cooking route uses Bread, Cooked Meat, Red Mushroom, Bitter Herb, and Secret Sauce. Look at your inventory and refrigerator after collecting the attachment before deciding which ingredient is still missing.
The note is a useful starting lead, but its contents should not be treated as an endless resource. Once you have used the attached sauce, further Pizza production needs another acquisition route. Open the attachment shown in your journal to check which ingredients remain available.
Grow the Eyeball ingredient
Buy Eyeleaf Seed from Crawford's farming shop and grow it on the farm. The harvested ingredient is called Eyeball; the seed itself cannot replace that ingredient in the Grinder. If you have the seed but the machine will not accept it, return to the crop-growing step rather than trying a different cooking recipe.
For a detailed distinction between the plant, its harvest, and other eye-related items, use the Eyeball and Eyeleaf guide. Eyeleaf is the direct farming route to the required material. Unmarked seeds and unusual combat drops are separate systems and are not needed to understand this basic processing chain.
Keep at least the Eyeballs needed for your immediate cooking plan before selling or preserving the harvest. Eyeballs have another processing use in Pickled Eyeballs, so it is possible to turn your available supply into the wrong product for a Pizza. Decide which finished ingredient you need before loading a device.
Exact Eyeleaf growth conditions and the Grinder's release-build output quantity are not confirmed here. Do not assume one Eyeball makes a specific number of sauces when calculating a large batch. Start from the amounts shown in your current crop and processing interfaces.
Get access to a Grinder
Hans's farming progression introduces the Grinder through The Farmer's Path. The tool also belongs to the workbench's available farm equipment. If you have no processor yet, continue Hans's farming tasks and equipment unlocks instead of looking for the Eyeball conversion in the Cooking Pot.
The Grinder and Cooking Pot perform different jobs in this chain. The Grinder turns the raw Eyeball into Secret Sauce. The Cooking Pot then uses the completed sauce as one ingredient in a finished dish, such as Pizza.
A Windmill appears as an alternative in older processing information, but its current Eyeball input and output have not been confirmed. Use the Grinder route for this task. It is the clearer route when the problem you are trying to solve is simply an empty Secret Sauce slot.
Put the Eyeball into the processor
Take the Eyeball out of storage and use the Grinder's input interaction to load it. Processing does not automatically collect its raw ingredients from storage in the same way that crafting can. The automatic storage access described for processors concerns fuel, not every ingredient you own.
This explains a common apparent blockage: the inventory count in a chest can be correct while the machine has no Eyeball loaded. Moving the input to your carried inventory and deliberately inserting it is the useful next step. It is not necessary to throw away the processor or assume the crop produced a broken item.
Check the Grinder's fuel requirement as a separate step. Earlier processing changes added visible coal requirements and allowed fuel to be taken from Primary Storage. That does not mean an Eyeball sitting in a refrigerator will automatically move into the Grinder with the coal.
After loading the processor, allow its displayed processing time to finish. Processing was changed in the September 2026 demo so that devices advance during sleep and complete when enough time has elapsed. Avoid relying on an old instant-output routine or an unconfirmed number of hours for every batch.
Cook Pizza with the finished sauce
The basic Pizza recipe uses the following five ingredients. Open the Cooking Pot and check that the Pizza recipe is available, then inspect the ingredient list before crafting. The sauce is one component of the recipe, so obtaining it does not solve a missing Bread or Red Mushroom requirement.
| Ingredient | Check before cooking |
|---|---|
| Bread | Use the finished bread item rather than assuming Dough is accepted |
| Cooked Meat | Check that the meat has already been cooked |
| Red Mushroom | Match the named mushroom ingredient |
| Bitter Herb | Keep the required herb available for the recipe |
| Secret Sauce | Use the finished Grinder output or acquired sauce |
The home cooking tutorial allows ingredients in the refrigerator to count as available for cooking. This is different from manually loading an Eyeball into a processor. If a recipe still shows a missing ingredient, carrying that exact ingredient is a simple way to check whether its storage location is the issue.
If you are preparing Pizza for the Gatekeeper, keep the completed dish for that conversation. Eating it or using it in another recipe does not complete the task. The Gatekeeper progression guide explains the later key search once you have moved beyond the first food request.
Other recipes that use Secret Sauce
Secret Sauce is used beyond the introductory Pizza. It appears in fish dishes, drinks, and later cooking recipes, so retaining a small supply can be useful if you are actively cooking. Having sauce does not automatically unlock those recipes or provide access to every cooking station.
Examples include Ghost Sashimi, which uses Ghost Flounder and Secret Sauce, and Special Hotdog, which combines a Fog Eel with Bread, Red Mushrooms, Salt, and sauce. Ice Cream uses Milk, Secret Sauce, and Salt. These examples are reasons to check your learned recipe list before converting or selling a whole batch, rather than promises that every dish is available at the start.
If a fish recipe is your next objective, the Ghost Flounder guide covers the basic lake catch. For milk-dependent cooking, the Tentacow care guide explains the ranch side of the supply chain. Choose the ingredient route that matches the dish you can currently make.
Plan sauce quantities for other dishes
The following recorded recipes show why it is useful to check the finished dish before starting a large processing batch. Some use a single Secret Sauce, while others need two. Compare the listed amounts with your current cooking screen, and remember that a later recipe must be learned before its ingredients can be used there.
| Cooking Pot recipe | Recorded ingredients | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Pizza | Bread, Cooked Meat, Red Mushroom, Bitter Herb, Secret Sauce | Starting recipe |
| Herbal Salve | Basic Herb Bundle, Secret Sauce, 5 Crushed Bones | Starting recipe |
| Ghost Sashimi | 2 Ghost Flounder, 2 Secret Sauce | Learned later |
| Blood Soup | Bloodberries, Secret Sauce, Salt, 2 Red Mushroom | Learned later |
| Special Hotdog | Bread, Fog Eel, 2 Red Mushroom, Salt, Secret Sauce | Learned later |
| Special Burger | 4 Corn, 2 Cooked Meat, 2 Bread, 2 Secret Sauce, 2 Salt | Learned later |
| Void Dinner | Voidberry, 2 Pumpkin, 6 Mystery Meat, 2 Secret Sauce | Learned later |
| Sushi | Stalktopus, 2 Ghost Flounder, 4 Bitter Herb, Secret Sauce | Learned later |
The simplest batch calculation starts with completed sauce in your inventory. For example, the recorded Pizza recipe needs one sauce, so two Pizzas require two sauces as well as two of each of the other listed ingredients. That calculation does not establish how many Eyeballs or hours will be needed to produce the sauce, because the current Grinder conversion quantity is a separate check.
For Ghost Sashimi, two sauces alone are not enough: the recorded recipe also needs two Ghost Flounders. For Herbal Salve, the other bottleneck can be the five Crushed Bones or the Basic Herb Bundle. These examples help identify whether you should spend the next trip fishing, gathering another material, or running the Grinder.
The recorded Expert BBQ Platter and Expert Garden Salad recipes each have a 75% success entry, unlike the 100% entries for basic dishes such as Pizza. Both also use two Secret Sauces alongside larger ingredient lists. Check that success field when choosing an advanced recipe, because having enough ingredients and being guaranteed a finished dish are different things.
Drinks, milk recipes, and other stations
Secret Sauce also appears outside the Cooking Pot. The recorded Juicer recipes include Cloudberry Punch with 4 Cloudberries and a sauce, Fingerfruit Juice with 2 Fingerfruit and a sauce, and Grape Drink with 2 Grapes and a sauce. Each still needs its own station, so seeing the ingredients in your bag does not mean the Cooking Pot offers that drink.
| Station group | Recipe | Recorded ingredients |
|---|---|---|
| Juicer | Cloudberry Punch | 4 Cloudberry, 1 Secret Sauce |
| Juicer | Fingerfruit Juice | 2 Fingerfruit, 1 Secret Sauce |
| Juicer | Grape Drink | 2 Grapes, 1 Secret Sauce |
| Juicer | Energy Drink | 2 Duskmelon Slice, 2 Secret Sauce, 5 Crushed Bones |
| Juicer | Ice Cream | 1 Milk, 1 Secret Sauce, 1 Salt |
| Oven | Eldersprout Pizza | 1 Eldersprout, 2 Bread, 2 Secret Sauce, 4 Common Mushroom |
| Oven | Mystery Roast | 8 Mystery Meat, 4 Mystery Steak, 1 Cauliflower, 2 Secret Sauce, 5 Bones |
Energy Drink is a later learned recipe in that reference, while the availability of a station remains a separate prerequisite even for recipes marked as starting knowledge. Open the device you actually own and check its recipe list. This keeps a missing station from being mistaken for a missing sauce unlock.
For a mixed cooking session, reserve the sauce for the dish tied to your active request before experimenting with several optional recipes. That is a resource-planning recommendation, not a rule that sauce must always be stockpiled. Once a dish has no immediate task or recovery use, you can decide whether making it now is worth gathering all the other ingredients.
Troubleshoot the missing ingredient
If the General Store has no sauce, move to the Eyeleaf route rather than waiting for an invented restock day. If the Grinder has no acceptable input, confirm that you are carrying Eyeball, not Eyeleaf Seed or Pickled Eyeballs. If the output has not appeared, check the loaded input, fuel requirement, and remaining processing time.
If the Cooking Pot still cannot make Pizza after you obtain sauce, inspect the other four ingredient slots. Bread and Cooked Meat are processed items themselves, and the mushroom name matters. Work on the missing component identified by the recipe rather than restarting the entire farming chain.
If you found sauce in a container while exploring, use that supply when it helps, but do not expect the same container to provide it on every visit. A lucky find can finish today's dish without becoming your long-term production method. For repeat cooking, the useful chain remains Eyeleaf, Eyeball, Grinder, then the recipe that needs Secret Sauce.
