The normal ranch cow in Welcome to Elderfield is a Tentacow. Start by opening the ranch, arranging its housing, and buying the animal through the ranch shop. A cow that appeared without a purchase and was named “0” was a separate historical bug, with a fix announced on April 12, 2025.

Open the ranch beside the farmhouse

Welcome to Elderfield Tentacows beside the red ranch barn

Watch for Hans's message about his brother Claus returning from a business trip. The letter explains that the boarded passage beside the farmhouse leads to the ranch and becomes accessible after Claus returns. Once that passage opens, speak to Claus about restoring the ranch and providing its buildings.

The ranch has its own progression even though it sits beside the farm. Access to crop beds does not mean you already have suitable animal housing, and an open ranch entrance does not mean every animal is ready to purchase. Visit the ranch's building and animal services before planning a milk supply.

If you are still establishing the farm, follow Hans's early farming tasks first. Those tasks introduce the farm's services and give you a clearer route through the early unlocks. There is no need to abandon that progression to search the town for a random free cow.

Tentacow housing and supplies

A Tentacow belongs in a Barn, with animals purchased from Henrietta and ranch buildings arranged through Claus. Prepare the housing before buying the animal. Also check the shop for Animal Feed and a Milk Bucket, since obtaining the cow is only one part of producing milk.

Early husbandry rules list a five-day growth period and a Milking Bucket requirement. They also describe daily milk from a fed adult Tentacow, except during rain. Those exact growth and weather rules have not been confirmed for the release build; use your animal and building descriptions if their instructions differ.

Keep the cost of the whole setup in mind when deciding whether to buy immediately. A cow purchase without feed or its collection tool leaves part of the routine unfinished. Current prices and Barn capacity are not confirmed here, so check those two details at the shop before committing your money.

Feed the trough before collecting milk

Put Animal Feed into the animals' trough rather than treating food in storage as completed feeding. The early husbandry routine checks feeding before midnight and calls for enough feed for every animal. When you add another animal, review the trough again instead of assuming the amount used for your first animal still covers the ranch.

There are two established ways to arrange feed: buy Animal Feed from Henrietta, or process Weeds and Raw Hay with a Feed Maker. The Feed Maker belongs to the workbench side of farm preparation. This gives farm clearing a second use when you already have the device, because suitable material can contribute to animal care instead of only occupying storage.

Check the processor's accepted input before loading a batch. Weeds and Raw Hay are feed ingredients, while completed Animal Feed is what goes into the trough. Having one of those materials in a chest is therefore a different state from having fed the cow.

Weeds can be foraged on the farm, while Raw Hay comes from farming Hay Seed. That gives the Feed Maker two different input routes: using material collected while clearing the farm, or setting aside growing space for a planned supply. Check the amount of usable feed already in the trough before deciding how much land to commit. A new hay planting cannot solve an empty trough immediately, so purchased Animal Feed remains useful while you wait for crops or processing.

A practical morning routine is to check the animal, check the trough, collect any available milk, and then decide whether another feed batch is needed. This is a planning recommendation rather than a requirement to visit at a specific morning hour. The key is to make feeding and collection separate checks so a missed step is easy to spot.

Friendship, petting, and milk quality

Feeding and petting raise animal friendship in the early husbandry system. Friendship affects product size and quality, while missed feed and poor weather affect happiness. Petting is optional in that system: an animal with sufficient feed can be left without a daily petting interaction without automatically losing friendship.

This makes petting useful when you are actively developing your ranch, but repeated clicks should not be treated as an unlimited friendship method. Feeding and petting are described as once-per-day interactions. Build them into the visit you already make to check milk and feed.

A high-friendship Tentacow can still produce a small, normal-quality milk item. A May 2025 change deliberately retained a small chance of that result at every friendship level so that low-quality cheese-aging recipes remain usable. A lower-quality bottle on an otherwise healthy ranch is therefore not enough by itself to prove that friendship has reset or feeding failed.

There is no confirmed percentage for that exception here. Nor is there a complete table mapping each friendship level to a milk grade. Use the animal's condition and recent feeding history to judge care, rather than treating one product as a precise meter of relationship progress.

Turn milk into cheese

Small Milk and Large Milk can be processed into Cheese using a Food Processor. Keep the milk's identity and quality visible when choosing a recipe, especially if you are working toward an aging result that needs a lower-quality starting ingredient. The small-milk exception matters because progressing animal friendship does not permanently remove access to every basic ingredient grade.

Milk also appears in cooking, including an Ice Cream recipe alongside Secret Sauce and Salt. Recipe availability depends on the cooking station and the recipes you have learned. If sauce is the missing ingredient, use the Secret Sauce acquisition and processing guide to work through that supply chain.

Do not process every bottle automatically if a task or recipe already needs milk itself. Checking those immediate requirements before starting a batch is a useful way to keep the ranch connected to your current goals. It also prevents a productive cow from feeling unhelpful simply because its entire output has already been converted into something else.

Rancher's Potion and product quality

Rancher's Potion is a separate quality aid made at the Potion Lab. Its earlier item description gives a 15% animal-product quality bonus lasting until midnight. This is a temporary product modifier, so its timing matters differently from the ongoing friendship you build by caring for an animal.

Use the potion's current description to check the active effect before planning a collection session. The recorded bonus is not a promise of a particular milk grade, and it is not a statement that the cow produces 15% more bottles. Product quality, product quantity, and animal friendship are different values.

The potion also does not replace Animal Feed. A temporary quality effect is useful only alongside the conditions that let an animal produce in the first place. Arrange the trough and the ordinary collection routine before spending resources on an optional product-quality aid.

If you are saving normal-quality milk for a cheese-aging recipe, the small-milk exception still matters. Raising friendship or using a quality aid should not be interpreted as a requirement to abandon recipes that use basic ingredients. Check the actual milk you receive and choose the recipe that accepts it.

Cook with milk before turning it into cheese

Milk can go directly into several dishes, without becoming Cheese first. The recipes below give four different uses for the raw cooking ingredient. They are earlier recipe values, so compare the current station menu before committing a batch, and check whether a recipe marked as learned later is already unlocked.

DishStationRecorded ingredientsRecipe knowledge
Mushroom SoupCooking Pot2 Common Mushroom, 2 MilkLearned later
TakoyakiCooking Pot1 Tentacle, 1 Dough, 1 MilkLearned later
Bubble-TeaJuicer3 Eyeball, 1 Cloudberry, 1 MilkKnown at start
SmoothieJuicer2 Milk, 2 SpiralberryKnown at start

Bubble-Tea connects the ranch with another crop chain. Its three Eyeballs are the raw ingredient, not Secret Sauce or Pickled Eyeballs. If you are planning that drink, the Eyeball growing and processing guide explains which crop supplies the item and why processing it first changes what you have available.

A recipe marked as known at the start can still require a station you do not yet own. Milk, Eyeballs, and Cloudberry in the inventory do not make Bubble-Tea appear at the Cooking Pot; the recorded station is the Juicer. Check the device before looking for a missing recipe unlock.

Recognize the Tentacow impostor and Cursed Milk

The ranch can also have a Tentacow impostor associated with Cursed Milk. This is a specific strange encounter, distinct from normal Small Milk or Large Milk and distinct from the old unexplained baby cow named “0.” The item involved is Cursed Milk, described as black with a toxic smell.

The recorded acquisition action is to milk the impostor when it appears on the Ranch. There is no confirmed trigger day, appearance chance, or repeatable schedule here. If you are trying to identify something you have already encountered, the milk's exact item name is more useful than the fact that the animal looked unusual.

What happenedRelevant distinction
A normal Tentacow produced Small Milk or Large MilkOrdinary husbandry output
A Tentacow impostor yielded black Cursed MilkThe impostor-related item
An unpurchased baby cow appeared with the name 0The separate historical random-spawn bug

Cursed Milk has an earlier listed sell value of 100 gold. That value does not establish a farming income route, because the impostor's appearance conditions are not confirmed. It also does not establish a purchase price or an amount obtainable every day.

The item's smell description does not explain a specific poison effect, combat encounter, or cooking use. Do not substitute it for ordinary Milk in a recipe unless the current recipe explicitly accepts it. Keep the item name visible when sorting an unusual ranch result so that ordinary production checks are not applied to a different item.

Check a Tentacow that is not producing

Begin with the animal's growth stage and its feeding setup. A young animal, an empty trough, and a missing Milk Bucket are different problems that call for different actions. Fix the specific missing part before changing the entire ranch layout.

Next, look at the weather and the instructions shown by your build. Early rules excluded rainy days from Tentacow milk production, so comparing a rainy day with an ordinary day can explain an apparent interruption. Because those precise conditions are not confirmed for the release build, a difference in your animal's tooltip takes priority over the earlier timetable.

Finally, separate milk quantity from milk quality. Receiving normal-quality Small Milk is not the same as receiving no milk at all. The former can be an intended result even at high friendship; the latter calls for checking growth, feed, collection tools, and any conditions shown in the current game.

A random cow named 0

The historical “0” cow appeared on a ranch without being purchased. That specific behavior was identified as a bug, and the April 2025 fix addressed randomly appearing baby Tentacows. It is not a dependable ranch unlock, a reward to trigger repeatedly, or a reason to delay buying an animal normally.

This also does not classify every unsettling cow encounter as a bug. Tentacows are intentionally unusual livestock, and separate horror scenes can involve cows. Match the problem to the actual behavior: unexpected ownership and the name “0” are the relevant features of the old report.

If that exact anomaly appears in a newer save, keep a separate copy of the save before experimenting and record the version and what happened before the animal appeared. The historical fix does not prove that a similar issue can never recur. Continue using the normal ranch services for planned animal progression rather than relying on an unexplained extra animal.
