Wormsprout is a farming route to Worm fishing bait in Welcome to Elderfield. Look for Wormsprout Seed in Crawford's farming shop, grow the crop, and keep the harvested Worms for compatible fishing spots. The seed is not bait until you have grown and harvested it.
Find Wormsprout Seed at Crawford's shop
Crawford sells farming tools and seeds once Hans has brought you into the farm's early progression. Wormsprout appears among the shop's seed choices alongside Eyeleaf, Wheat, and other crops. Open the seed list and check the full item name before buying: Wormsprout Seed is the item you plant, while Worm is the item you load onto a fishing rod.
If Crawford's farming service is not available yet, return to Hans's early farm progression. His introductory tasks establish your access to the field and farming supplies. Continuing that route is more useful than searching fishing shops for a plant that belongs in the seed inventory.
Before purchasing several seeds, read the seed description and compare its purchase price with the money you have available. The shop price determines how many seeds you can buy; a selling-value entry answers a different question.
Earlier Wormsprout growing reference
The earlier item reference lists Wormsprout as a four-day crop for the first three seasonal equivalents: Rebirth, Harvest, and Witch. Death is not included in that entry. This is more specific than a general statement that some crops grow in every season, but it is not a release-build growing test.
| Field | Earlier recorded value |
|---|---|
| Seed | Wormsprout Seed |
| Harvest | Worm |
| Listed growth period | 4 days |
| Listed seasons | Rebirth, Harvest, Witch |
| Seed sell value | 2 gold |
| Seed purchase source | Crawford's farming shop |
The four-day period does not tell you how many Worms each plant produces. Without a confirmed harvest quantity, it cannot be turned into a reliable per-day bait output or profit calculation.
Plant for a future bait supply
Prepare the soil with your hoe, plant the Wormsprout Seed, and maintain the crop with your regular watering routine. Rain can cover watering during wet weather. Keep track of the planted crop separately from nearby Wheat or Eyeleaf so that you know which plant is ready to harvest.
Wormsprout is useful when you want farming to contribute to later fishing sessions. It is less helpful when you have already reached the lake with no bait and need an immediate cast. In that situation, check your existing Worm supply or a Bait Pack before starting a new growing cycle.
Plan your next fishing trip around the Worms actually harvested rather than a promised number from each seed. A small initial planting is a reasonable way to learn how the crop fits your current farm without dedicating every open bed to an unmeasured bait supply.
Keep Worms separate from other bait
Worms and Leeches work at Lakefront fishing spots, but they are not interchangeable for every target. Worms are the bait to begin with when pursuing Ghost Flounder. Leeches are associated with Fog Eel, and switching between the two changes the relevant lake catch chances rather than guaranteeing one fish on every cast.
Bugs belong to different fishing water, including the Mall, while Maggots serve the early sewer fishing spots. A full stack of Worms therefore does not solve every bait requirement in the game. Check the fishing spot's accepted bait before loading the rod for a new location.
The fishing tutorial covers rod setup and the timing minigame. If your immediate objective is Herb's first fish, follow the Ghost Flounder route after harvesting. Those two steps connect the crop to an actual use without requiring a late-game rod upgrade.
Load the harvest onto your rod
Carry your fishing rod, select the harvested Worms in your inventory, and use them to load bait. Simply carrying Worms does not equip them. Check the rod's bait information before interacting with the water, especially if you previously used Bugs or another bait type.
When the game says no bait is equipped, inspect the loaded amount first. When it says the bait is wrong, inspect the type and the fishing location instead. These messages point to different problems, and neither is fixed by planting another Wormsprout while usable Worms are already in your inventory.
You can use an Old Fishing Rod for the early Lakefront objective. A Wormsprout harvest is part of supplying that rod; it does not raise the rod's tier or unlock every fishing location. Treat equipment progression and bait production as two separate needs.
Use Bait Packs when the crop is not ready
The General Store sells Bait Packs, and the early pack can provide different kinds of bait. Worms are one possible result, alongside other bait types. Opening a pack is therefore a way to replenish general fishing supplies, not a guaranteed purchase of a particular number of Worms.
This gives you a choice based on timing. A planted Wormsprout can support a future session, while a pack can provide bait immediately if its random contents suit your destination. Neither route has a confirmed cost advantage here because the current seed price, harvest size, and pack probabilities are not all established.
Keep useful alternative bait when a pack produces something other than Worms. Leeches have their own lake uses, and Bugs can matter when your tasks take you into the Mall. A pack that does not advance today's Ghost Flounder objective can still contribute to another fishing task.
Reserve Worms for Special Donut
Harvested Worms also appear in cooking. Special Donut is a later learned Cooking Pot recipe that uses four Worms alongside Pumpkin, Red Mushrooms, Bitter Herbs, and Bread. Wormsprout Seed does not replace the harvested Worm ingredient in that recipe.
| Special Donut ingredient | Recorded amount |
|---|---|
| Pumpkin | 2 |
| Red Mushroom | 4 |
| Bitter Herb | 4 |
| Bread | 2 |
| Worm | 4 |
Elroy adds the Special Donut recipe to his shop after Hans's Skull Chalice task, alongside the pumpkin recipes. Visit the cook after claiming Hans's reward, buy the recipe if needed, and then check the Cooking Pot. This is a concrete unlock to pursue if your Worm supply is ready but the dish is missing.
Check the Cooking Pot to see whether you have learned Special Donut before collecting a batch specifically for it. A recipe marked as learned later will not necessarily be available when you buy your first Wormsprout Seed. The recorded recipe lists a 100% success rate, but its ingredient requirements still have to be met.
Use Worms in Protein Shake
Protein Shake uses the Juicer rather than the Cooking Pot. Its recorded recipe requires one Nightcrawler, two Worms, one Egg, one Milk, and one Wheat. It is marked as known at the start, although you still need access to the Juicer to make it.
| Protein Shake ingredient | Recorded amount |
|---|---|
| Nightcrawler | 1 |
| Worm | 2 |
| Egg | 1 |
| Milk | 1 |
| Wheat | 1 |
Nightcrawler and Worm are separate named ingredients. Supplying extra Worms does not satisfy the Nightcrawler slot, and an unplanted Wormsprout Seed is neither of them. Match each item in the Juicer menu before deciding that a missing ingredient is a crop problem.
The recipe connects the field to animal products as well as insect ingredients. If Milk is the missing component, use the Tentacow care and milk guide to check the ranch side of your supplies. If Wheat is missing, the next useful planting may be Wheat rather than additional Wormsprout.
Compare extra Worm sources while plants grow
Wormsprout is one way to obtain the harvested bait item, but Worms also have several incidental sources. The early item reference lists random garbage loot, a gift from Sam at the Lakefront, and a result from the sleep event in which critters crawl on your legs. These can supplement an existing supply while your planted crop matures.
| Additional source | Useful distinction |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 Bait Pack | Random bait; its early Worm result is the 1–3 band |
| Garbage loot | An incidental find rather than a fixed amount per container |
| Sam at the Lakefront | A character gift, not a confirmed daily shop service |
| Critters sleep event | A possible event result, not a controllable planting alternative |
The sleep-event entry is not a dependable farming method. There is no guaranteed procedure here for triggering that event or repeatedly receiving its favorable result. Continue ordinary play and treat unexpected Worms as a bonus rather than postponing an available crop or shop route to chase them.
Protect the planted field from crows
The Ragged Scarecrow sold among Crawford's farming supplies reduces the chance of crows eating crops by 20% while it is in range of a field. This is the early recorded item effect. Check its placement when you add equipment around a Wormsprout planting, since the benefit depends on covering the field rather than leaving the object in your inventory.
Crow protection and watering solve different problems. A Scarecrow does not water the crop, and a watered crop is not automatically protected against being eaten. If you are investing in a larger planting, look at both parts of the field setup before spending the remaining money on more seeds. The protection is a reduced chance, not complete immunity.
Choose a Scarecrow for the growing field
The older equipment list distinguishes the purchased Ragged Scarecrow from the crafted Basic Scarecrow. Their names are easy to mix up when planning an upgrade, but they have different protection values. Check the Workbench for the crafted options and keep the recorded limit of one Scarecrow per field in mind. Buying several low-tier objects is not the same upgrade route as replacing the one covering that field.
| Scarecrow | Earlier crow-protection effect | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Ragged Scarecrow | 20% reduced chance of crop loss | Crawford's shop |
| Basic Scarecrow | 40% reduced chance of crop loss | Workbench |
| Jack o' Scarecrow | 60% reduced chance of crop loss | Workbench |
| Tortured Scarecrow | 80% reduced chance of crop loss | Workbench |
| Dripping Scarecrow | 100% reduced chance of crop loss | Workbench |
| Floral Scarecrow | Same protection as Dripping | Workbench, with the Egg Festival blueprint |
The Floral blueprint is a cosmetic upgrade over Dripping protection. Winning that festival reward is therefore a different goal from obtaining your first protection for a Wormsprout patch. If you only need to keep a bait crop growing, compare the protection you already have with the next affordable Workbench option. Reserve the festival pursuit for when its appearance or other rewards matter to your plans.
Field equipment and crop bonuses
When you expand a bait-growing field, the workbench offers field equipment that affects crops more broadly. Harvest Effigies increase the chance of doubled crops, while Fertility Effigies increase the chance that an unwatered crop grows. They address different parts of farming and are not interchangeable upgrades.
| Earlier field equipment | Recorded effect while in range |
|---|---|
| Lesser Harvest Effigy | Adds 4% to the chance of doubled crops |
| Medium Harvest Effigy | Adds 8% to the chance of doubled crops |
| Greater Harvest Effigy | Adds 12% to the chance of doubled crops |
| Lesser Fertility Effigy | Adds 8% to unwatered crop growth chance |
| Medium Fertility Effigy | Adds 16% to unwatered crop growth chance |
| Greater Fertility Effigy | Adds 24% to unwatered crop growth chance |
These earlier descriptions list a maximum of two effigies per field and require the object to be in range. Check the object's placement and current description before spending materials. Simply owning an effigy in storage does not satisfy an effect described as applying while it is positioned near a field.
A chance bonus is not a fixed Worm harvest size. A Harvest Effigy does not establish how many Worms every unmodified plant produces, and a Fertility Effigy is not a promise that watering can be ignored. Keep the ordinary watering routine when you want predictable crop care, and treat any favorable bonus as part of the actual harvest you collect.
Spend the harvest on the objective you actually need
Before casting, check whether you need a named fish for a task, ingredients for cooking, or simply more fishing practice. For a named-fish task, keep the required catch until you have visited the task giver. Selling every fish immediately can send you back into another bait cycle even after you successfully caught the right species.
Wormsprout's clearest role is supplying Worms through the farm. It does not promise infinite bait, a guaranteed Ghost Flounder, or the best gold return per bed. Once you have harvested a batch, the useful next action is straightforward: load the Worms, visit compatible water, and put the catch toward your active objective.
