To reach the Old Woods, progress through the Mall Administrator part of the main task chain and bring a Sturdy Axe or better for the forest's tool barrier. If you are already inside but cannot continue west, work on the Local Joggers Club. If the obstruction is the later dark route into the Deep Woods, follow Prof. Dayton's research for the Eternal Lantern.

These are different stages of access. The Mill Key, club membership, and Eternal Lantern do not all belong on the checklist for first reaching the forest. Start with the barrier you can actually see and the objective currently in your journal.

You need the Catacombs Key after exploring the woodsAdrian's Tree Branch Cleanup task and its return conversation.

An upgraded axe addresses a physical tool requirement. Membership opens routes through the forest. Research addresses later exploration, and Adrian's task leads to another region. Completing one of these does not automatically award the items belonging to the others. That is the main distinction to preserve when several forest-related tasks are active at once.

Open the initial route through Mall progression

The usual progression into the Old Woods follows the Mall Administrator encounter. If you have not completed that part of the game, continue Adrian's Tentacle Cleanup chain rather than assuming the only missing requirement is an axe. The task leads through the Mall's hallway area and associated objectives. The forest is connected to this broader progression, not simply to carrying any axe in your bag.

Speak with Adrian in his apartment to accept Tentacle Cleanup and receive the Mall F1 Hallway Key. Enter the door in the Mall Food Court to reach the back offices. The route includes the Office Worker Fishing objective before the Mall Administrator. That fishing task involves a Mall Stalktopus, with the Old Rod and Bug bait used for it. If you are stopped by the fishing interaction, the fishing tutorial covers the input sequence and equipment distinctions.

After completing an objective for Adrian, return to him to claim the result. Elderfield's task chains often distinguish doing the work from reporting it, and that distinction matters again when his later letter leads toward the Catacombs. Check your journal after the conversation so you know what the game is actually asking next. An encounter you remember winning may still have an unfinished turn-in attached to it.

Bring the Sturdy Axe

The Old Woods tool requirement is a Sturdy Axe or better. A Basic Axe is a different tier and should not be treated as equivalent because it can already chop some objects. If the forest obstruction calls for the stronger tool, continuing to swing a weaker one will not replace the upgrade. Review the axe upgrade route and material requirements before making another trip.

The established early upgrade route involves the Rusty Axe from Crawford, the Basic Axe associated with Adrian's Tentacle Cleanup progression, and Molly's workshop. The recorded Sturdy Axe recipe uses the Rusty Axe, Basic Axe, ten Copper Bars, and eight Iron Bars. Open the Upgrade tab at Molly’s Forge and check the Sturdy Axe recipe before spending materials, since these counts come from the documented upgrade route and can differ from a later build's menu. Ore in your inventory is not the same item as a finished bar.

If copper is delaying the upgrade, explore more than one unlocked mine instead of waiting for a single empty room to refill overnight. Mines regenerate on a weekly cycle after bathing, and the regenerated resources do not guarantee a particular ore. The mine reset guide explains that distinction. It can help you separate an actual refresh problem from a refreshed mine that simply did not produce the copper you wanted.

The axe requirement is not proof that you need full Joggers Club membership before entering the first forest area. Membership belongs to further routes and the Old Woods Mines progression. If you can already explore the opening section, your initial access has succeeded. Move on to the relevant local task instead of repeating the Mall or workshop steps.

Join the Local Joggers Club

At the Campsite, speak with Michelle about the club. Tell her you are not a member and ask to join. She directs you to Barry, the club leader, beginning the sequence that eventually grants access to more secret routes. Do not stop at the first introductory conversation and assume that you are already a full member.

The recorded task sequence runs through six objectives:

  1. Speak with Barry about the Local Joggers Club.
  2. Find the Mill Key somewhere in the Old Woods.
  3. Enter the Abandoned Mill and find the Lost Mirror.
  4. Bring the Lost Mirror to Barry.
  5. Tell Michelle that you have been accepted.
  6. Bring Michelle one Verdite Ore.

The return conversations make this longer than a single fetch task. Finding the mirror does not replace bringing it to Barry, and Barry's acceptance still needs to be reported to Michelle. Check which person the journal names after each step. This is particularly important if you have done one jogging-related task but still cannot use the western routes.

The club's reward is access to more secret and forbidden jogging routes. It is therefore relevant to exploring further west and reaching areas beyond the first forest section. It is not merely optional flavor attached to the Campsite. Finish the sequence through the Verdite delivery when membership is the obstacle to your intended route.

Find the Mill Key in the correct layout

One recorded Mill Key route begins in the first forest map with a giant headless statue holding a sword. In that layout, look east and then north for the key on the ground. The direction describes movement within the same map, not two transitions into new maps. If you walk out of the area each time you follow a direction, you can miss the intended search area entirely.

Treat the statue as a layout identifier. The Old Woods should not be reduced to one universal coordinate copied from a different arrangement. If your first map does not match that landmark, the reported directions do not establish where the key is in your current layout. Search with your actual surroundings in view rather than forcing a map description onto a different area.

A release-period player report also associates the key's appearance with accepting the jogging club task first. The exact trigger has not been fully established, but starting the task before searching is the sensible order. Visit Michelle and Barry, confirm that the journal asks for the Mill Key, and then explore. This avoids spending a long trip looking for an objective before its own task is active.

The Mill Key opens this named route. For ordinary locks requesting a Basic Skeleton Key, use the separate Skeleton Key guide.

Retrieve the Lost Mirror and finish membership

Once you have the Mill Key, enter the Abandoned Mill for the Lost Mirror. An older route records six Fingerlings inside the Mill, so prepare for an encounter rather than treating the building as an empty pickup room. That number should not be used as a guaranteed description of every current version or arrangement. The task objective you need to resolve is the mirror.

Take the mirror back to Barry, then speak to Michelle about your acceptance. Her remaining request is one Verdite Ore. An established location note places Verdite east of the Old Woods bus stop; use that landmark when looking for the material. Check that the item you bring is the ore named in the task, rather than assuming a processed material with a related name will satisfy it.

After the delivery, revisit the route that had been blocked. Full membership, rather than the first invitation or first jogging task, is the relevant distinction in reports of western forest access. If the journal still points to Barry or Michelle, resolve that conversation first. A missing turn-in is a more direct explanation than an imagined requirement to finish the entire Stone Tower.

Reach the Ancient Tree for Adrian

Further exploration of the western Old Woods becomes important for Tree Branch Cleanup. This task follows Adrian's earlier Tentacle Cleanup progression and a follow-up letter. Open the letter through the journal at home, then speak with Adrian to take the next assignment. Simply entering the western forest does not mean that the cleanup task is active.

Tree Branch Cleanup sends you to defeat the Ancient Tree. The club routes are relevant because the target is in the western forest. Once the task's action is complete, return to Adrian for the reward and progression. That return is part of the route to obtaining the Catacombs Key.

Do not search the Abandoned Mill for a random Catacombs Key drop as a substitute for this chain. The Mill and mirror help with membership; Adrian provides the task that leads to the cemetery region. If your real goal is the Catacombs, follow the Catacombs entrance and key guide after the Ancient Tree. It separates the entrance key from later mine keys and deep-area requirements.

Enter the Deep Woods through Dayton's research

The Deep Woods are a later stage than entering the Old Woods or unlocking its western routes. Prof. Dayton's Deeper Research chain provides the Eternal Lantern for that progression. You do not need to complete the Stone Tower first. Although Dayton is involved in both tasks, the research objectives have their own sequence.

The documented chain starts after Bone Cleanup, when Adrian awards the Mall Elevator Key. Use the elevator access to investigate the Mall basement and its untranslated console. Bring that discovery to Dayton, who supplies a translation guide. The next research objective sends you back toward the basement for the Essence of Daeus.

Return the Essence of Daeus to Dayton to receive the Eternal Lantern. The research then continues into the deepest Old Woods for the Essence of Delvek, followed by another return to the professor. This is why a player can have a strong axe and club membership yet still be missing the item for a later dark route. Those earlier requirements solve different barriers.

Follow the current research objective rather than searching for a lantern as a generic random forest drop. The chain explicitly ties the lantern to a return to Dayton with the essence. If your journal still asks about the basement or its console, continue there. If it asks you to find Delvek's essence in the woods, you have moved beyond the lantern acquisition step.

Explore with the current barrier in mind

The opening forest can already contain dangerous encounters. A recorded trip through the first area includes a Living Stump and Soul Rot, followed by the player retreating. If an enemy interrupts your search, recover and return with a clearer objective rather than treating every fight as a mandatory route gate.

Older statements that limited the Old Woods to a Patron build described an earlier release period. They should not be used as instructions to purchase separate access for the full game. Likewise, a later Deep Woods requirement should not be applied retroactively to the first forest entrance. The meaningful checks are your present route, tool, active tasks, and reward conversations.

For a first visit, finish the Mall progression and bring the correct axe. For the Mill and westward routes, complete the Local Joggers Club chain. For the deepest forest, advance Dayton's research until you have the Eternal Lantern. Keeping those three stages separate turns a vague inability to enter the woods into a specific next action.
